St Mary's C of E (Aided) Primary School, Pulborough

What will our literate pupils, authors, editors, copywriters, journalists, tutors, teachers and proof-readers be able to do when they leave us?
We want pupils to be confident and articulate in their use of spoken English, be able to give opinions and views in a confident and articulate way and get their point across to a range of audiences.
We want pupils to leave St Mary's CofE (Aided) Primary School as fluent, ambitious and curious readers who will sustain a love of reading forever. Their application of the phonetic knowledge they will have developed will enable them to read and enjoy texts in a range of genres.
We want pupils to appreciate and apply a rich vocabulary and develop a strong understanding of grammar whilst applying creativity using a range of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
We implement the curriculum as seen below on the medium term plan.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Summative assessment of pupil discussions about their learning.
  • Images of the children’s practical learning.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Pupil’s books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
  • Annual reporting of standards across the curriculum.

Recommendations for texts for each year group
Why not look for these texts to help your child?
Pupils will experience a structured journey through a range of books and move towards greater independence in their choice of reading materials by the end of Year 3.
Writing lessons are based on the 'Talk4writing' approach, using model texts to support word and sentence level and including activities to further develop comprehension and understanding.
We promote reading for pleasure as this in itself plays a major role in reading development and promoting reading in this way provides a creative outlet. Teachers act as role models in their enthusiasm for reading and all classes will be read to every day.
