Cooking with a ration card

Published: 24 Oct '24

Year 6 have enjoyed making Woolton Pie in DT this week! This was a classic staple in the country’s diet during WW2.

Lord Woolton was appointed at the Minister of Food by Neville Chamberlain in 1940 - his job was to stop the nation going hungry at a time of scarcity. He established the rationing system so that everyone received a fair share of what was available.

We learnt that the British public were encouraged to use home grown items to supplement their rations. Woolton Pie was named after Lord Woolton - this was a popular vegetarian dish recommended due to the shortages of meat, fish and dairy products during World War 2.
