About our School

St Mary's is a co-educational primary school. We have a roll of 311 pupils (September 2023)  ranging from 4 to 11 years old currently attending the school.

St Mary's is a Church of England Foundation of 'Aided' status, maintaining close links with the Parish Church of St Mary and the church appoints many of our governors. At major festivals the pupils attend special school services in the Parish Church and at other times use it as a learning resource.

The school actively promotes its Christian ethos. As an Aided School there is special reference to the teachings of the Church of England and the children are encouraged in Christian worship. The school has its own policies, which are based upon the statements of the Diocese and the Local Educational Authority.

The school was opened in 1969 and completed in 1972.  It has the benefit of spacious and modern buildings. There are thirteen classrooms, a pastoral support area, two activity areas, a large hall/gym and a school library.  We have 4 mobile banks of laptop computers, two sets of iPads which the children use in their classrooms.  All classrooms have adjacent cloakroom and designated toilet facilities.

There are extensive grounds incorporating two large hard-surfaced playgrounds, an adventure playground in the shape of a pirate ship, a trim trail, a Forest School area and a large playing field for physical education and recreation. Our wildlife pond enables pupils to participate in pond dipping and to gain first hand experience of caring for the environment.

On-site swimming facilities are provided by a heated outdoor learner pool which is extensively used in the summer term, during the summer holidays and in the first half of the autumn term.
