As a church aided school we were also subject to an SIAS inspection which focussed on the characteristics of the school as a church school.  The SIAS report stated that the distinctiveness and effectiveness of St. Mary’s as a church school was outstanding.

  • Physical education
  • Emotional health and well-being, including bullying

Investor in Careers

St. Mary's was the first primary school in the country to be granted the Investor in Careers Award.  It recognises the work that we do to increase the children's awareness of potential careers.  Examples include:

welcoming a wide variety of professional visitors to the school to talk to the children

organising visits to local businesses

developing a business enterprise scheme for our Year 6 pupils where they will grow and sell their own flowers, fruit and vegetables

Dyslexia Friendly School

Key staff have been trained by the British Dyslexia Association and they have passed on their knowledge to the rest of the teaching staff and teaching assistants.

The staff's enhanced understanding has helped to ensure that pupils who have dyslexic tendencies can be fully involved with their learning.

Activemark 2007

The Activemark 2007 award recognises our commitment to encouraging our pupils to participate in sports and other active pursuits. The children take part in at least 2 hours of PE a week.  We also provide a wide variety of after school sports clubs.

Our older children take part in competitive sports events against local schools (cricket, swimming, football, hockey, tag rugby).  They are also encouraged to join local sports and activity clubs and participate in sports training and events at our local secondary school, The Weald in Billingshurst.

Autism Aware Award

Several key staff have been trained under this West Sussex run scheme.  They have passed on their knowledge to all of the other teachers and teaching assistants.

The staff's increased understanding of autism is already having a very positive impact on several pupils throughout the school.

The Arts Council

Silver Artsmark

This award recognises the importance that we place on teaching the full range of arts based subjects either in the classroom, during dedicated Art Days or in after school clubs.

We employ a specialist Art teacher and she teaches in classes throughout the school.

South and S.E. in Bloom

 School's Competition

We were thrilled to achieve a Gold Award and the title of South East Regional Winner in this competition in 2009.  This recognition rewards the efforts that we have made in developing our school grounds for the benefit of our pupil's learning.

The Bishop's Commendation

The Bishop's Commendation was awarded to St. Mary's in 2008 for "promoting Christian values through creativity and peace by developing the school grounds".
